My Wife, My Kids, My God!

By Dr. David Lee Asbery

William Lee Kaplan, "Kap", couch potato first, husband and father of four second, is on edge. After 30 years of marriage, he now has to face the possibility that his beloved wife, Clara, may no longer be there for him. As he sits in a pool of worry and regret, he can clearly hear Clara's repeated pleas for help. Now that her life is in the hands of God All Mighty, Kap finally makes an effort to better understand their kids. What does he do or say to his oldest daughter, Melissa, whose name has become a euphimish for "angry Black woman? " How does he make sense of his son's, Malcolm, decision to work at a lingerie shop. In his mind, this isn't a job for a man. And last, can he fix the bond that has been broken between his twin daughters, Brina and Tina, female counterparts of Cain and Abel? My wife, My Kids, My God! is a journey of a man and his last chance to make things right. Will Kap pull it together and finally become the father that his wife has begged him to become, or is it too late? Only God knows and right now He's not telling.

Family Ties

My kids, My God is a well-told truth. It is a light hearted comedy that touches on serious issues; Issues that some families are facing every day. It was enlightening and at times entertaining to experience the household from the father's point of view. It was also admirable to watch Kap as he transformed from being a wall flower to being fully involved in his children's lives. That spoke volumes about his commitment to both God and his family. I sincerely enjoyed every page of this read and am excited to have it on my shelf.

Funny With a Side of Serious

Asbery does a superb job of defining a negro family that has both parents coming from an educated point of view. Asbery makes no hesitation to make sure his readers get a great glimpse of his characters complete with "fat asses" and many other body parts that definitely are not spared the hillarious and often unrelenting look of how things really are. He dosen't sugar coat any of the situations including discussions amongst other people of color in their rants about his so called "better life." He is honest in his attempts to give his children a better life, but his children still struggle for power as with his twin daughters they give the father "Kap" and mother "Clara" a lot to work on. Then there is Malcolm, he is given a great lecture the kind most parents need to be armed with in todays tough economy, when Malcolm asks for the latest pair of "Jordans." The hysterics don't stop there, the oldest daughter is as was quoted in the editors comments a euphism for angry black woman, she is up to no good when she finds out that a man that she considers to be worthy of her life, is two timing her. I strongly recommend this book, just for nothing else to get introduced to this family of most unusual characters I pormise you will laugh your ass off, as well as take a deep sigh when all the "serious" stuff is going on as well. Great Book David!

Truely a Must Read

David Asbery gives an entertaining and stirring look at what it means for a father to be involved in the lives of his children. As a parent, the antics, trials, successes of Kap's children were all to familiar. What I loved most about this book was Mr. Asbery's ability to tell a story that leaves you wanting to know more about what happens to the characters after you read the last sentence. Kudos to Mr. Asbery!
